The Parish Church of Saint Paul, Peel

Tsunami & Earthquake Disaster Relief

Christian Aid is working in India, Sri Lanka and Indonesia - the areas most badly affected by the tsunami and earthquake. With their partner organisations, they are providing shelter, food and clean drinking water to those in need. They are also looking to aid the long-term reconstruction effort.

Money is being spent through their partners and through Action by Churches Together - a global alliance of churches and their aid agencies - in the countries affected by the disaster.

Our Church

The original Peel Chapel was consecrated in 1760 and was the only place of worship in the local area.

The foundation stone of the present Church was laid by Lord Kenyon in 1874 and the consecration took place in 1876. The estimated construction cost was £5,500. The spire, completed in June 1898 cost a further £2,000 and has a height of 165 feet from the ground.

Restoration of the Church

A survey was carried out this year and it was found that the Church roof is in need of repair and the rainwater furniture requires replacing. The foundations of the Porch require examining to find the cause of the subsidence and to rebuild the Porch. The Choir Vestry roof also requires replacing. The work is estimated to cost around £200,000 and we have applied to the English Heritage Fund in partnership with the Heritage Lottery Fund for that amount. If the money is granted we will have to provide 20% of that amount or £40,000 - quite a tall order.
